Job Overview

The Creative Learning Assistant (Volunteer) supports teachers in planning and facilitating creative arts and crafts activities for students in a therapeutic educational setting. Working closely with up to three teachers, the volunteer will help design engaging, student-centered crafts that promote creativity, skill development, and participation.

Responsibilities include collaborating with teachers to develop lesson plans, preparing and organizing materials, and assisting with activity implementation. During group sessions, teachers will lead instruction while the Creative Learning Assistant provides hands-on support and encourages student engagement.

This volunteer opportunity is expected to last approximately six months, beginning in late August. Volunteers should anticipate committing approximately 1.5 hours onsite each week, in addition to 1–2 hours of planning and preparation time.

Applicants should:

• Have experience or demonstrated interest in arts and crafts, creative learning, therapeutic recreation, art therapy, or related activities.
• Be comfortable working with children and adolescents in an educational or therapeutic setting.
• Demonstrate patience, creativity, flexibility, and strong interpersonal skills.
• Be able to collaborate effectively with teachers and follow instructional guidance.
• Have experience supporting individuals with disabilities, neurodiverse learners, or students with behavioral health needs preferred.
• Background knowledge or experience in special education, autism support, therapeutic programming, education, psychology, social work, or a related field is preferred but not required.
• Successfully complete all required volunteer onboarding, training, and background screening requirements.

• Collaborate with assigned teachers to plan arts and crafts activities that support student learning and engagement.
• Assist with lesson plan development and preparation of project materials and supplies.
• Set up and organize materials before group sessions and assist with cleanup afterward.
• Support teachers during arts and crafts groups by helping facilitate activities and encouraging student participation.
• Provide one-on-one assistance to students as needed during creative projects.
• Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
• Communicate effectively with teachers regarding student needs, project implementation, and activity outcomes.
